Insider Report What Its Really Like Working in Human Resources

Insider Report What It’s Really Like Working in Human Resources Human resource department â€" perhaps the one department in the workplace you don’t want to hear from since it might be bad news. But what is it like working in human resources? Is all you do really just about firing people and finding replacements? In this report, I’ll outline the different roles available in the sector and the misconceptions popular culture has on human resources before examining the qualifications and characteristics you need to work in the industry, as well as the core realities of what life is really like for a human resource specialist.WIDE SPECTRUM OF AVAILABLE ROLESWorking in human resources can be quite different to what you might think in your mind.First, though, it’s important to realize the industry is not offering you just a single role with similar types of responsibilities no matter what company you work for.Indeed, the human resources sector can offer a wide range of roles that all come with rather different requirements and responsibilities.Of cou rse, like with most industries, you have variety in terms of executive and junior roles, not to mention how companies in different industries might require unique expertise and knowledge from its human resources department.Interestingly to some other industries, human resources can also offer roles that require specialist skills in other sectors. For example, certain roles might require you to have a good grasp of sales or even marketing. Therefore, the opportunities to create a career in human resources come wide and varied.Of course, there are plenty of roles calling for specialization in human resources and management, so it’s not all related to other departments or sectors. In terms of the available roles in human resources, you could work with job titles such as:HR AssistantHR OfficerTraining OfficerHR DirectorAlthough there are a variety of different roles available, your job essentially involves dealing with the personnel in your company. This can touch upon topics such as hir ing new employees to developing current employees. Human resource roles are also often involved with drafting contracts, looking after health and safety in the company, and creating strategic personnel strategies to boost the business.Naturally, since the roles are so closely linked with the company you work for, the specific responsibilities depend largely on the organization and its requirements.THE ‘HIRE’ AND ‘FIRE’ IMAGE OF HUMAN RESOURCESWhat about public perception and the misconceptions people have about working in human resources? The most common problem is the generalization of the industry into something rather black and white. Human resources is often considered as the ‘hire and fire department’.To many, human resource roles are just about finding the right candidates for roles, conducting job interviews and laying off staff when the company tells them to do so.While this is part of the role for many human resource roles, it certainly isn’t as straightforward as that.As I outlined above, the sector is often in charge of things like employment law and the strategic interests of the business and its employees and therefore, it’s wrong to view it through a narrow lens of responsibilities. There’s also another side to the public perception of the department. It can sometimes be considered as the ‘mother’ of the workplace. If you have a problem, you run into the arms of the human resources department and complain about your issues. The problem with the perception is how people then imagine the department is either ‘good’ or ‘bad’ â€" they either make decisions to benefit the company or the employee. However, in reality, human resources has to find a more balanced approach to employment and personnel problems. Now, if you’d like to get a glimpse of how the popular culture portrays the human resources sector and working in it, there are quite a few good movies to watch. Some of the funniest and the most interesting portrayals of h uman resources jobs come from movies like:Inside Out â€" The story of different emotions and how they get along inside your brain. Doesn’t feature human resources per se, but almost feels like what the HR management team has to deal with every time there’s a problem in the company! The Human Resources Manager â€" A well-made drama about an HR manager who travels to take back a deceased former employee to his home country.Office Space â€" A hilarious take on what might happen when the HR department wouldn’t have qualified workers to keep a check on things. The above films are worth watching, especially after you start working in the industry.Movies can be an eye-opening way to see what other people think of the industry and perhaps helpful in finding the little lines of truth about the sector in the sea of generalization and misconception!WHAT DOES IT ACTUALLY TAKE TO WORK IN THE INDUSTRY?So, now you’re on top of the misconceptions and the different roles that might await you i n the sector. But how do you find yourself working in human resources? The qualificationsThe most common route to a career in human resources is by obtaining the right kind of qualifications. Human resource, development and management specific courses are the easiest and most straightforward way of getting into the industry. These routes give you a good grasp of the industry and help you understand the terminology, methods and strategies used in a variety of HR roles. Example degrees in HR include things like:Human Resource ManagementHuman Resources Information Systems AnalystsThe degree options offer opportunities for both a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree. Furthermore, you can also obtain certifications that help find roles in the industry. In some instances, these might even be necessary for certain roles. The certifications can vary from country to country. In the UK, a course from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) can be a good route to take.As ide from getting a degree in HR specific courses, it is possible to get into the industry with a different academic background.Other common degrees that can help you find a job in the industry include:Business degreesAdministrative degreesLaw degrees, especially if you specialized in employment lawIndeed, transferring from a different sector is not at all uncommon in the industry.A 2009 survey of HR professionals showed that over one-third of respondents came to HR from an administrative background. So, opportunities are there even if you don’t have HR specific qualifications. The characteristicsAside from obtaining qualifications, you also need to have specific skills and characteristics in order to fit in the industry. If you can develop these four key characteristics, you might well be a good fit for working in human resources:People-oriented mindsetIt’s rather obvious you can’t make it in HR if you don’t like other people. The role is largely about balancing the strategic in terest of the business with the personnel and therefore, you need to be able to know how to align competing interests. If you don’t care about the wellbeing of others, you probably don’t have the right type of empathy to work in the sector.Good communication skillsSince you are dealing with other people on a regular basis, the roles also require you to have great communication skills. You need to be able to listen to other people, explain complex procedures to them and do all of this with compassion. You do not always deal with happy things (“You got a job!”), but sometimes you might have to make tough decisions (“I’m sorry but we have to let you go.”).Therefore, you need to be able to get your point across effectively yet empathetically. There can also be quite a bit of reading between the lines in the role.People don’t always tell you exactly what they think (perhaps in fear of reprisal), so you need to be able to understand what people want and need from the subtle cl ues and behaviors.Organizational abilitiesWorking in human resources will also require you to have great organizational abilities. The job is not straightforward and no matter what your official title, you’ll need to be in charge of different things. You might need to know about the payroll, the contracts, the training programs and so on â€" keeping everything running smoothly will require a good attention to detail and the ability to organize and prioritize tasks.Your days don’t tend to follow the same routine â€" one day you might be doing rounds around the company, while others you are talking to clients- and you must be able to schedule and sort out your responsibilities accordingly.Development focused outlookFinally, you must be willing to develop your skills. The industry is constantly changing and it requires many skills â€" you need to be IT proficient as well as grasp the latest legal changes in employment law. It’s crucial to have a curious attitude and the willingness t o develop your skills further. You shouldn’t enter human resources thinking you know everything. Not to mention you might be in charge of developing the strategy for the organization, as well as calling for the employees to train further. So, if you’re not able to know how development happens, why it’s important and the benefits of self-development, you probably won’t thrive in the industry.FIVE CORE REALITIES OF WORKING IN HUMAN RESOURCESHuman resources can be a challenging industry and working in the sector is likely to produce plenty of experiences â€" preparing yourself for what it’ll be like is not easy as no day is alike and different roles can seem different. However, there are five core realities working in human resources is likely to introduce you to. If you approach the industry with these realities in mind, you are likely to have rewarding and realistic career expectations. To get you started, here’s a video of a typical day for a Human Resource Director: Fast-ch anging schedulesHuman resources roles will require a lot of work and the days can be rather long. However, the work is not your typical nine-to-five in terms of the tasks you need to do.The workdays can be widely different from each other â€" one way you are strategizing a development and training scheme, the other looking for cost-cutting measures across the departments.Heather Clark, director of Human Resources at the Huntzinger Management Group, described the average workday to After College by saying, “It may come as a surprise, but, there is no typical day! Every day is different and every day means a new challenge in my world. Whatever “checklist” I thought I was going to accomplish, rest assured will need to be changed by the end of each work day.”The fast-changing work schedule means you won’t get bored at your job. However, it also means you need to be prepared to think fast and be able to quickly identify the most important tasks. You don’t have time to ponder th ings for too long in human resources â€" effectiveness is the key.Routine performanceWhile your workdays might not be alike on most days, you are required to provide routine-like performance. Expectations in the industry are high and employers don’t have time for failures in this crucial department.Your days might be different, but your list of tasks doesn’t change much: you might be in charge of the payroll, need to conduct interviews, go over contracts, organize training for new recruits and so on.These tasks can become routine-like tasks and results need to be meticulous.Furthermore, there is an administrative side to human resources and this can seem rather isolating at times. While it’s easy to think you’d be meeting up with other employees all the time, you can actually find yourself sitting in the office cubicle going through paperwork on multiple days.Business-oriented mindsetIt takes a business-oriented mindset to work in the industry. Many people overlook the need fo r human resources department to ensure the business is capable of achieving its objectives â€" what could be more important to achieving the vision than having the right personnel? You’ll be working closely with the people that can make or break the company, so you need a good understanding of business.Human resources professionals don’t just need to focus on finding a hardworking employee, they also need to know what kind of worker the industry needs right now â€" the talent and skills that can work in the current and future climate. When John Millikin, clinical professor of management and previous HR employee, was asked about his most rewarding part of the job, Millikin said it was, “having an impact on the success of the business and on the lives of the people in it”.People-focusedWhile business knowledge is an essential and somewhat surprising part of the industry, the key part of your job is about managing people.Human resources is among the most people-centric industries out there. If you can’t handle people and interact with all sorts of personalities, then you probably won’t be a good fit for the job.Your days will include plenty of phone and face-to-face conversations, meetings, performance evaluations and so on.You need to be good at analyzing and evaluating personalities and how they would fit the organization â€" it’s not a personality contest, but about finding the right talent to support the company goals. However, the people-focused nature of the job also brings its downsides. You don’t always have to deal with people in a positive environment. As the human resource professionals interviewed for the CBS News piece pointed out, the hardest part of the job is laying off staff and giving the bad news. Therefore, while you need to be able to empathize and relate to people to forge relationships, you also can’t take the role too seriously.Solid salary and career prospectsNow, what about the money? You don’t want to pick your future care er based on money alone, but you also shouldn’t be oblivious to what earning potential is ahead of you.In the human resource sector, the outlook is rather positive â€" especially in terms of job security. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the industry is expected to see job growth of 5% by 2024.The rate is around the same as the average job growth rate so it’s nothing special, but definitely on a strong footing. The salary prospect in the sector will naturally depend a little on your official job title.Furthermore, your earnings can be impacted by the geographical location â€" big firms near major business hub cities tend to pay more â€" and your expertise and experience. The organizations size can also be a factor â€" small companies don’t have the same resources as larger corporations.A good indicator of the potential comes from looking at the averages, both for professionals and the recent graduates. For example, recent graduates can expect to earn:Around $30,00 0 in the UKAround $54,000 in the USIf you enter the sector with a Master’s Degree rather than an undergraduate degree, you can push up the starting salary. In the US, Master’s Degree in Human Resources could mean you’re starting with an average salary of:Around $66,000 for HR ManagerAround $67,000 for HR Business PartnerThe earning prospects jump up quite a bit as you gain experience. The average salaries for different HR positions include:Senior Training Officer $33,000 to $39,000HR Manager $44,000 to $57,000Head of HR Department $94,000 to $125,000Directors of human resources could earn anything between £100,000 to £500,000. The earning potential is definitely there for anyone willing to push themselves to higher positions. You can find out the exact figure estimations and the sources for the above numbers here, here and here.THE BOTTOM LINE OF WORKING IN HUMAN RESOURCESHuman resources is definitely a great career path for someone who loves working in a demanding industr y and who gets along with people well. You need to be able to make strategic decisions and communicate with people from all walks of life. The industry is not quite what it is portrayed to be â€" there is plenty of balancing you must do between the business interest of the company and the wellbeing of the employees. However, it’s a rewarding job with a good earning potential and strong future job prospects. If you like to challenge yourself and push yourself further, then human resources can be a fantastic career path.

The German American Bund, American Nazis of the 1930s

The German American Bund was a Nazi organization in the United States in the late 1930s that recruited members and openly supported Hitlers policies. Though the organization was never massive, it was shocking to mainstream Americans and drew considerable attention from the authorities. Fast Facts: The German American Bund The German American Bund was a Nazi organization which operated openly in the United States in the late 1930s, attracting press attention and generating controversy. The organization was led by Fritz Kuhn, an immigrant from Germany who was a naturalized American citizen.Nearly all of its members were American citizens, though mostly of German descent. The German American Bund was active between 1936 and 1939. The Nazi leadership in Berlin had tried to create a support organization and propaganda operation in the United States but failed until an ambitious and belligerent German immigrant, Fritz Kuhn, emerged as a leader. A naturalized American citizen, Kuhn rose to prominence before his 1939 imprisonment for embezzlement abruptly ended his career as the topmost American Nazi. The German American Bund was separate from the America First Committee, which emerged later and expressed more mild support for Hitler while advocating that the United States stay out of World War II. Origins The German American Bund evolved from an earlier organization, the Friends of New Germany. During World War I, some German-Americans had been subject to discrimination and ostracism, and the Friends of New Germany cited continued resentment of some German-Americans as it recruited in the late 1920s and early 1930s. The Friends of New Germany leadership was affiliated with Hitlers Nazi movement in Germany. American members of the Friends of New Germany took an oath pledging loyalty to Hitler, and also swore that they were of pure Aryan blood and had no Jewish ancestry. The organization was being guided from afar by one of Hitlers close associates, Rudolf Hess, but it was marked by inept leadership in America and demonstrated no clear sense of how to carry the Nazi message to mainstream Americans. That changed when the leader of the Detroit chapter of the Friends of New Germany emerged as a fanatical leader. Fritz Kuhn After serving in the German army during World War I, Fritz Kuhn attended school and became a chemist. In the early 1920s, while living in Munich, he became fascinated with the small but rising Nazi movement, and subscribed to its racial and anti-Semitic fixations. Kuhn got into legal trouble in Germany by stealing from an employer. His family, assuming a fresh start would be helpful, aided him in moving to Mexico. After staying in Mexico City for a short time he moved on to the United States, arriving in 1928. On the advice of a friend in Mexico, Kuhn traveled to Detroit, where jobs were said to be plentiful in the factories run by Henry Ford. Kuhn admired Ford, as the great American industrialist was widely known as one of the worlds foremost anti-Semites. Ford had published newspaper columns titled The International Jew which advanced his theories about Jewish manipulation of financial markets and the banking industry. Kuhn found a job working in a Ford plant, was laid off, and eventually obtained a job working as a chemist for Ford, a job he held until 1937. In Detroit, Kuhn joined the Friends of New Germany and his fanatical devotion to Hitler helped him advance to the leadership of the local chapter. At about the same time, the Nazi regime in Berlin began to view the fractured and faltering national leadership of the Friends of New Germany as a liability. Hess withdrew support for the group. Kuhn, sensing an opportunity, moved to replace the organization with something new and, he promised, more efficient. Kuhn called for a convention of the local leaders of the Friends of New Germany, and they met in Buffalo, New York, in March 1936. A new organization, called Der Amerikadeutscher Volksbund, or the German-American Bund, was formed. Fritz Kuhn was its leader. He had become an American citizen, and he decreed that members of the German-American Bund would also have to be citizens. It was to be an organization of American Nazis, not German Nazis operating in exile in America. Gaining Attention Basing his actions on those of Hitler and the Nazi hierarchy, Kuhn began his rule of the Bund by stressing loyalty and discipline. Members were required to wear uniforms of black pants, grey shirts, and a black military-style Sam Browne belt. They did not carry firearms, but many carried a truncheon (said to be for defensive purposes). Fritz Kuhn saluting marching Bund members at Camp Nordland in New Jersey. Getty Images Under Kuhns direction, the Bund gained members and began building a public presence. Two camps, Camp Siegfried in Long Island and Camp Nordland in New Jersey, began operating. In 1937 an article in the New York Times noted that 10,000 German Americans attended a Camp Nordland picnic at which American flags were displayed beside flags of the Nazi swastika. Nazis at Madison Square Garden The most memorable event staged by the German American Bund was a huge rally at Madison Square Garden, one of New Yorks major venues. On February 20, 1939, about 20,000 Bund supporters packed the huge arena as thousands of protesters gathered outside. The rally, which was promoted as a celebration of the birthday of George Washington—who was depicted on a huge banner hung between swastika banners—featured Kuhn giving an anti-Semitic speech. Banners hanging from the balconies proclaimed Stop Jewish Domination of Christian America. The mayor of New York, Fiorello La Guardia, had seen enough. He understood Kuhn and the Bund had a right to free speech, but he wondered about their finances. He held a meeting with Thomas Dewey, the district attorney (and future presidential candidate), and suggested an investigation of the groups taxes. Legal Problems and Decline When investigators began to look at the finances of Kuhns organization they realized that the self-styled American Fuhrer had been embezzling money from the organization. He was prosecuted, convicted in late 1939, and sent to prison. Without Kuhns leadership, the German American Bund essentially disintegrated. Kuhn remained in prison until the end of World War II, when he was deported to Germany. He died in 1951, but he had faded so far into obscurity that his death was not reported in the American press until early 1953. Home Schooling Is An Amazing Experience This Year

Home schooling has been an amazing experience this year. 1It has helped me grow in my faith and in my knowledge of the Bible. I have so much more knowledge dealing with the Bible and I am now so much closer to God than I have ever been in my life up to this point. 2I have been more energized and excited to learn, my entire personality has taken a huge turn for the better. I am now an outgoing, bubbly girl ready to learn, that’s from the inside out from the light of Jesus.3 Also, I have been able to learn much more than I than I would have in a year of public school in one home school year! I have done an extra semester in my math, I have also been on so many school trips that are all for school. 4There have been so many benefits for my family as well. We have all grown so much closer and we actually get to see each other. Another huge benefit, I have noticed, of being home schooled is, 5I don’t have to worry about getting vulgar, ungodly, lessons that put down Christia nity and God all day, every day and I don’t have to deal with all the horrible vulgarity from students and teachers alike. I have grown in my faith, and knowledge; I have grown closer to God, family, and friends. I have gained so much knowledge about God and his word since starting home schooling in early September. The Changes in Interbank Lending Rates in China, India and Switzerland

Introduction Interbank lending is a market that exists among the banks, and it is all about banks lending money to other banks. Banks usually lend out money to other banks, but the terms of the loans are usually short term. The maturity period for the loans lent to the banks is usually one week. When one bank lends a loan to another bank, it usually charges a certain interest rate which is dependent on the period to maturity.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Changes in Interbank Lending Rates in China, India and Switzerland specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The interest rate charged is referred to as the interbank rate. At times, banks get in situations whereby they do not have adequate cash to satisfy the demands of its clients. In such a situation, the bank has to obtain a loan from another bank to satisfy the clients. On the other hand, a bank may have excess liquid assets to the extent that it can lend out the cash and earn an interest from the assets. Such banks lend money to other banks (Navarro, 2011). Over the last one year, the interbank rates by the central bank have been reduced significantly in Europe, Asia and India. This article will discuss the changes in interbank lending rates in the continents mentioned. A country from each of the continents is to be investigated in the article. The countries to be investigated are China, India and Switzerland. Central Banks in Europe, China and India The central bank plays a significant role in regulating the economy of a nation. When the economic growth slows down, the central bank lowers the lend rates so as to increase the flow of money to speed up the economy. This causes the inflation rate to increase. In the recent years, there have been a slow down in the economy which has hit most parts of Europe and America. It has also affected other parts of the globe such as India, China and also Japan. It has been reported that, for the fir st time since 2009, China has experienced a low growth rate in the manufacturing sector (Davis and Orlik, 2011). In the effort to counter the slow growth rate in the economy, China central bank lowered the cost of lending so as to boost the economy. The central bank of china has the reserve requirements for the banks (The Economist Newspaper Limited, 2012). The action by the China Central bank came at a time when the same measures were being taken in Europe. The European Central bank also cut down the lending rates in the effort to ease the borrowing burden by the other banks. The European Central bank together with the Bank of England started taking actions to lower the cost of dollar loans to the European countries (The Economist Newspaper Limited, 2012).Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Several central banks in Europe lowered their lending costs. The Swiss National bank wa s one of the banks that took measures to lower their lending costs and also took measures to weaken their currencies. Despite lowering its lending cost, the Swiss National Bank has accused other banks such as the European Central Bank and the Japanese bank of causing too much influence on the interbank lending cost. It accuses them of spreading the influence to other nations. The London Interbank Offered Rate is the one that sets the benchmark for lending rates by other banks in Europe and it is being accused of influencing these rates too much to benefit itself (Vaknin, 2012). In India, the economy slowed down, and it grew with the lowest rates for the first time since the year 2009. This had substantial effects in the central bank and the other banks as well since it became difficult for them to lend out money due to the high rates which scared borrowers. In the effort to improve the economic growth in India, the central bank took measures to lower the interbank lending rates. At the same time, it allowed international supermarkets into the country. This step was criticised by politicians since it brought too much competition in the internal market. Lowering the lending rates to the bank increases the growth rate and hence the Central bank of India was trying to boost the economic rate by lowering the interbank lending rates (Lucarelli, 2011). Conclusion The banking crisis that hit most parts of Europe happened due to financial crisis, which started in the year 2007. In most parts of the world, the economic growth slowed down causing an economic recession. Banks went short of funds to meet the demands of their customers. The financial strains made it difficult for countries in paying the loans they acquired from other banks due to the high lending rates. As a result, central banks took action to lower the interbank lending rates in the effort to rescue the banks and also to boost the economic growth which had slowed down. This did not achieve too much. Some countries have regained their economic strength, but others continue to suffer from the economic turbulence that was experienced. The government leaders need to embrace good economic policies to avoid the occurrence of a financial crisis. Reference List Davis, B. Orlik, T. (2011). China’s Move Shifts Growth to Top of Agenda. How to Deal With Someone Threatening You With a Weapon

How to Deal With Someone Threatening You With a Weapon If you come face-to-face with someone threatening you with a gun, knife, or any  other weapon, there are steps that you can take to make the situation less dangerous. Stay Calm The most important thing to do will probably be one of the most difficult things to do, and that is to remain calm. Remember that you will need all of your mental facilities to increase your chances of gaining control of the situation, and if you are in a state of hysteria, it is unlikely that you will be able to maintain mental clarity. It is likely that the person holding the weapon on you will not be calm and if you exhibit high anxiety, there is a good chance it will increase their anxiety. Screaming can be particularly dangerous in this type of situation because it can cause the assailant to panic or anger them. Remaining calm can have the opposite effect. Make Eye Contact It may be difficult to believe, but many criminals who pull weapons on people have the ability to mentally dehumanize their victims. If you make eye contact, it makes them view you more as a human being and less like a disposable object. Figure out the Assailants Goal There are certain common scenarios that result in having a weapon pulled on you. If the purpose is to kill you, then you would likely already be dead. Mass killers enter schools, places of employment, malls, etc., and just start shooting either randomly or with predetermined goals such as shooting at specific a group of people. Most criminals who point a gun without shooting it hopefully do not want to shoot it. Their goal may be to rob you for money,  to buy drugs, a car for a joyride, hold you hostage to get out of a crime gone bad or kidnap you for money. Most of the time in these types of situations the weapon is being used to control you, not necessarily to kill you. Follow Instructions Calmly You want to follow the instructions of the person who has the weapon but do not do it without communicating what you are about to do. For example, if they ask you for your wallet, before reaching into your purse or pocket to get it, say to them what it is you are about to do. Then do it slowly and calmly. Do not make it appear that you have any other intention other than to do what it was that you told them you were going to do. Do Not Challenge Them If you have always wanted to be a hero, now is not the time to do it. Not only could it cost you your life, but it could also cause harm to others. Being physically or verbally aggressive to the person with the weapon will do nothing but ignite the situation. Trying to grab the weapon will likely get you killed or seriously injured. Resisting their instructions will not only anger them, but it will also force them to show who is in charge. What you want to communicate to them is that you plan on cooperating. Talk to Them, but Carefully If you have an opportunity to engage the assailant in light conversation, try to direct the conversation so that they talk to you about themselves and subtly feed their egos by making them feel that you think what they are saying is intelligent and has merit. Not only are you trying to connect to their human side, but you also want them to believe that you do not feel you are superior to them. If you do get into a conversation, keep your voice low and your sentences short. Ask questions and avoid talking too much about yourself. They want you as their audience, not the other way around  if there is an opportunity to inject something short and personal do it. For example, if they say what high school they went to, you may want to ask them if they knew your friend who went to the same school, even if that friend does not exist. If a controversial subject comes up such as politics or religion, this is not the time to get into a debate. Appear interested in their opinion and if asked, tell them that you can tell they know a lot about it and you can see their point of view. Remember What the Assailant Looks Like Try to notice what the person holding the weapon looks like, but do not stare at them and rather than trying to figure out their weight or height, pay attention to something that is distinguishable, like a tattoo, gang symbol, birthmark, moles, and scars. Being Held Hostage A hostage situation has different dynamics than armed robbery. If, for example, you work at a bank where a robbery attempt has gone bad, and you are being held hostage, do as you are told and remain very quiet. Your goal should be to appear as invisible to the person holding the gun as possible. If you see a chance to escape do it, but only if the probability of your escape being successful is high. If the assailant is negotiating with the authorities and you are chosen as one of the hostages to be released- go. It may be hard to leave your fellow employees or friends behind, but you staying behind will do nothing to improve their situation. It will simply anger and frustrate the person telling you to go. Remember that in hostage situations the police are probably making plans for your rescue and your best chance of survival is not to be the main focus of the assailant. You want to try to position yourself as far away as possible from them as possible. If the criminal is talking with a hostage negotiator and the talk breaks down, the next step might be that sharpshooters start to take aim. You want to avoid being grabbed as a human shield or inadvertently shot by a flying bullet. Distance away from the guy holding the gun is the best way to go. When to Stop Cooperating Unfortunately, there is no way to say for sure that any of these suggestions will keep you alive. Paying attention to your common sense and instincts will ultimately be your best chance of survival. However, there are times when doing everything a criminal is telling you might not be the way to go, but again there is no cookie-cutter instruction book to follow. Carjackings can be particularly perilous if the carjacker insists that you remain in the vehicle or instructs you to drive. Any diversion that you can think of to avoid this situation could increase your chances of survival. Carjacking victims have pretended to faint outside of the car. Others who have been forced to drive have driven into poles or parked cars in well-populated areas, but again every situation is different, and you must rely on your own ability to access the situation and try to find the best way out. After the Ordeal Is Over After the ordeal ends and if the police are not on the scene, call 9-1-1 as soon as possible. Notifying the police quickly will increase the chance of apprehending the suspect and preventing future victims. Provide them with as many details as you can and be available for follow-up interviews.

Great Leader assignment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Great Leader assignment - Essay Example Lincoln was idealistic yet practical. Abraham Lincoln’s great skills in leadership showed in all his endeavors even as a member of the House of Representatives. As a great leader, Abraham Lincoln showed pure resolve when he decided that America should free all the slaves and save the Union. In the same way that America’s Founding Fathers did almost a hundred years before his time, Lincoln made a decision to free the people once more. In 1837, even before becoming president, Lincoln had already made it clear that he was against slavery. In 1856, he even expressed opposition towards former President Franklin Pierce when the latter allowed Nebraska and Kansas to choose for themselves whether or not to adopt slavery. His led the opposition to slavery even when he was still a member of the House of Representatives. Moreover, despite his strong involvement in the slavery issue, Lincoln helped to pass bills that modernized the economy in the Pre-Civil War era, with bills that promoted the constructions of canals, banks and railroads, and those that regulated tariffs (â€Å"Abraham Lincoln,† Biography.com, 2014). Although Lincoln was fighting against slavery when he was still a Congressman, he knew he would be more useful if he applied himself to practical aspects of the economy such as infrastructure. As a leader, Lincoln had the resolve and determination. When he became President, Lincoln’s skills in leadership were put to a great test and one which he passed with the victory of the Union during the Civil War. Even at the expense of around 24,000 American soldiers, Lincoln’s leadership showed in his great moral resolve to free the slaves at any cost. The election of Jefferson Davis to the newly founded Confederacy was the blatant response of the South to Lincoln’s election to the presidency. Thus, in order not only to free the slaves but to save the Union and the integrity of

Role of the UN in Peace-Support Operations

Role of the UN in Peace-Support Operations THE ROLE OF THE UN IN PEACE-SUPPORT OPERATIONS: A CASE STUDY OF MALI INTRODUCTION: Since the transformation of evolution of modern state system following the treaty of west phalli in 1648, the international system has witnessed so many challenges ranging from conflicts, under-development, authoritarian, bad governance etc. This is due it the anarchy nature of the global system. Since the creation of the united nation after world war II in t 1945 the organization has been saddled with the responsibility of maintain global peace and security and to prevent the outbreak of another world war. Peace support operations has been one area the united nations has actually carried out in various states that have witnessed long protracted conflicts which includes Africa, Latin America, middle-east and Europe. It is in this light that this research paper will try to look at the role of the United Nations in peace support operations using the conflict in Mali as its thrust at analysis. METHODOLOGY: This study will look at secondary method of data analysis In order to understand the nature and dynamics of peace support operations. Sources include books and internet. UNDERSTANDING OF THE CONCEPTS: In order to look at the subject of discourse, it is important to understand certain concepts which I belief will help me in presenting my analysis. What is Conflict? According to the oxford learner’s dictionary, conflict is defined as a situation in which people, groups, countries are involved in a serious disagreement or argument or violent situation or period of fighting between two countries. Conflict can also be seen as a situation in which there are opposing ideas, opinions, feeling or wishes. Wallensteen, (2002), said â€Å"A conflict requires a disputed comp actability; two parties strive to acquire at the same time an available set of scarce resources, which can be either material or in material†. What is Peace Support Operation? The purpose and principle of the united nation charter is to restore and maintain peace. Peace support operation is the operation that makes use of diplomatic, civil, and military to bring about peace and stability in the states. Since the end of the cold war, peace support operation has been utilized by international countries to respond to crisis and promote peace in countries undergoing challenges of war, violence etc. Overview of the Conflict in Mali There have been ongoing uprisings of conflicts in Mali since the early 1960’s till date .the first tuareg conflict started in 1963 but the not last a year because it was crushed by the military forces under the command of captain Diby sillas diarra.in June 1990 another tuareg rebellion broke out when the leader Ag Ghali of the popular movement of the liberation of azawad (MPLA) attacked a police post with a small group of solders who has just returned from an army camp in Libya. This conflict later was dissolved in a peace treaty of the Algerian brokered and a national pact of 1992. The resent conflict in Mali began on the 16th of January 2012 between the government forces and Tuareg rebels which resulted to the death of more than 200,000 people according to the report by the united nation. These group of rebels where fighting for the independence or greater autonomy for northern Mali in an area known as azawad. The rebels formed a group known as movement for the liberation of azawad (MNLA).The group is aimed at fighting to make azward an independent homeland for the tuareg people and this organization was formed in 2011. However the African union, U.S.A, E.U failed to recognize their independence, also the Security Council stated the need to uphold and respect the sovergnity unity and regional integrity of Mali and rejected any deceleration of independence in Mali. By late May 2012 the Malian government rejected the north independence also. The rebels lost control over the new state which northern Mali, which led to the takeover of the north by the Islamism militant. This caused ethnic tension in Mali since the north was taken over by the Islamic groups. The people of Mali feared the intent of sharia law in the region and a possibility of establishing terrorist activities. The Role of UN in Conflict Mediation in the Malian conflict The United Nations was formed on the 24th of October 1945, soon after the end of the Second World War. It was a successor of the League of Nations. This organization was formed to prevent the outbreak of another war since the League of Nations failed to prevent the Second World War. In 1945, 51 members met at San Francisco and signed the United Nations charter and the UN came into existence. There are currently 192 member of the United Nations, the headquarters which is at New York City USA. The United Nations has 6 recognized languages which are: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russia and Spanish. There are 6 organs in the UN these are; the general assembly, Security Council, economic and social council, secretariat, the international court of justice and the trusteeship council. Under the Security Council we have 15 members which 5 is the permanent (France, USA, UK, china and Soviet Union). The Security Council is responsible for maintaining international peace and security and a lso determines the existence of a treat of peace or acts of aggression from a state to another. The Security Council doesn’t just act on crisis, it takes time to debate and negotiated on the best possible way to handle a problem. Following the written report of the former secretary general Boutros –Boutros Ghali in 1992 â€Å"an agenda for peace†, it is the responsibility of the un security council to recognize the limitation of peace keeping and also the abstainace of war doesn’t ensure peace and security. The UN Security Council should put heads together to give the best solution for the problems at hand in matters to conflict and war. In the case of the Mali crisis the Malian government sent letters to the UN requesting the use of international force. Since the security general doesn’t just carry out orders like that they have to debate and negotiate about it, while they were doing so the French felt compelled to act immediately in other to stop the crisis from escalating and causing increasing damage. Although the French was invited by the government of Mali people still question their use of force, France defended itself saying that they have the right to collective self-defense authorized by the un secretary general in the resolution 2085 (ordered in 20th December 2012). Since the United Nations Security Council couldn’t launch military interventions under its own command, it gave the use of force and planning to the ECOWAS, AU and other states. CHALLENCES FACING UNITED NATION PEACE KEEPING MISSIONS:- Even though the United Nations has been able to achieve remarkable success iits is faced with some challenges. The Following are some of the challenges facing the United Nations Missions: 1 FINANCIAL CHALLENGE: Unlike sovereign- states whose financial capabilities are usually gotten from diverse channel, the United Nations rely solely on contributions from members – state to be able to carry out its duties effectively. Mediating in conflict and peace resolution is an expensive project which requires mobilization of resources in order to facilitate and also ensuring the degree of success in the operation. 2 Absence of a UN –Permanent Army: Another challenge facing peace-keeping operation and mission is the absence of a UN permanent Armed –forces for carrying such missions. Most times the organization rely on member states to send her own troops to the organization so as to carry out this mission in which the countries do not really want to there army. 3 Geographical and Social –Cultural challenge:- One of the success of any combatant involved in any peaceful resolution of conflicts is their degree of adaptability to the social –cultural and geographical location of the country it used in. most times the UN troops are taken to regions and areas they have little or no background knowledge on. 4 The Challenge of Clarity of the Mandate: Another challenge facing the success of peace keeping operations is the lack of a clear-cut mandate and objective the mission. The absence of a clear-cut objective of the mission is also another challenge facing the United Nations peace keeping missions. CONCLUSION:- In conclusion, the paper tries to look at the role of the united nation in the Mali conflict and the challenges they face. If the organization can be able to see other streams of getting revenue or funds it will also go a long way in reducing some of the financial mishaps it is facing particularly as it relates to Peace-Keeping operations and other humanitarian aid it offers. The United Nations should try and have Its own permanent stand –by army without relying solely on member states to help them when it want to mediate in any conflict resolution The study was able to look at concepts such as the United Nations, and the Malian conflict. Debate Against School Uniforms Essay

Have you ever played Wheres Waldo? By issuing students school uniforms, finding a problem child would be a lot like playing that game in a real life situation. Just like any other argument you will have your pros and cons of the idea, but in my opinion and many others, the cons highly outweigh the pros of wearing school uniforms. Many intelligent individuals will lose their motivation to excel and be prevalent because they are used to being ordinary like everyone else. School uniforms shout conformity in many ways and to me that isnt the way to get your students to prevail in the classrooms. Individuality is a huge factor for school age children and their chance to grow among their peers. School uniforms will do nothing but cut down on a students individuality. A uniform is not the way to cut down on school violence. The only thing that will cut down on school violence is if parents would pay attention to their children and keep their children out of trouble and give them consequences when they disobey and not to let them run wild. Uniforms cause regularity. We need free thinking children to become the thinkers of tomorrow, not drones who will continue making the mistakes of previous generations. When we argue against school uniforms we argue against an education system that seeks to produce workers and for an education system that seeks to produce open-minded all-around human beings. One major argument of school uniforms is that they will save money for less fortunate families. This statement can also be battled very easily. There are just as many experts who believe that the cost of school uniforms is a negative factor as those who see it as a positive factor. Some experts believe that it increases the amount of clothing parents will have to buy for their children because the children will still want and need clothing for the hours they are not in school. Uniforms can be more expensive for a family who buys from second-hand stores or who relies on hand-me-down clothing from friends and family. Some experts believe cost is a negative aspect of school uniforms because there is no use for them outside of school. Ultimately school uniforms will likely cost equal to higher amounts of money than buying regular clothing for a child. Everyone wants to be comfortable in what they are wearing and school uniforms limit that option significantly. Many people say that different types of clothing feel comfortable to different people. Some children are more comfortable in a specific material or style of clothing. Uniforms reduce ones ability to choose clothing that fits individual comfort needs. Experts believe that children need to feel comfortable in order to maximize learning, and that uniforms can therefore prevent academic success. Another problem would be if the school was required to wear ties. Wearing a tie would put an enormous damper on childrens ability to pay attention. Most students would spend a majority of their time situating and loosening their tie to the desired fitting. The sad part is that by the time it feels comfortable it is against the dress code and they find themselves in trouble. Identification is one of the biggest factors ruled in against school uniforms. Many people state that you could easily site outsiders of the school, and it would also eliminate gang colors. If you have a school full of children with the same clothing on you would find it nearly impossible to identify a child who was causing trouble. One example is if someone caught a glimpse of a child stealing and then tried to give a description. The description would most likely fit a majority of the students in the school. As for eliminating gang colors, there are better ways to take care of that. If you can tell a gang by its colors and the ones affiliated with it, why not send the gang member to a school away from the other children. Any group that will endanger the life of the other students doesnt deserve to learn with them. Instead of taking away their ability to recognize each other by colors they should be sent off to boot camp or somewhere alike. In conclusion school uniforms can easily be avoided by making the right judgments and by working harder to keep our children away from conformity. Each factor for uniforms can also be backed by an even better reason not to put them in action. Our countrys children need to be able to form an individual personality and ability to learn and progress through adolescents. Each area of discussion shows that children would fair more successful without the statement of a school uniform in hand. Eastwind Trading Company Essay

The potential opportunity and long term sustainability of Eastwind Trading Company lies in the uniqueness of their product. The Swanson pearls are the only remaining collection of handmade freshwater pearl buttons in the world. The amount is limited and cannot be easily duplicated due to current environmental condition. Therefore, the fact that no one else carries these types of buttons is the main competitive advantage the Eastwinds Trading Company posses. This exclusiveness, however, can also result in the company’s weakness: very perishable, expensive, and difficult to handle small items that require careful organization and specialization to control costs. The company is still in the existence stage. Gail and Martha are now focusing in getting enough cash to cover all the expenses the acquisition of the business will bring. However, they may also need to center their attention in how to generate enough tools to make their business expand and become a viable company. By having a product that is unique and hard to duplicate, this advantage is long-term. There is a great opportunity in expanding the business by creating new bias of selling the pearls. Hiring sales representatives that will cover all the nation, approaching clothing manufacturers and designers that will buy the buttons at wholesale price and covering the areas that were previously uncovered by the Swansons are some of the main goals of Martha and Gail. These goals will situate the business at a competitive advantage against competitors by satisfying the needs of customers that would be attracted by the exclusivity of the buttons. The key risk for investors is that button business is such an unconventional deal that it may result unattractive. The demand for exclusive buttons in the manufacturer industry as there are other types of cheaper fastenings that can be used for clothing i. e. Zipper and plastic buttons may be decreasing. Consequently, the Eastwind Trading Company needs to implement some sort of diversity in its line to supplement the sales of the raw material when the demand for buttons is low. Martha and Gail have experience in management and marketing which makes a good addition to the development and success of their future business. Their experience can be applied in the development of a new strategy that will re- introduce the pearls in the market while expanding the product in areas that were never covered by the previous wners. The fact that the raw material could be cut off leaving a semiprecious stone that could be mounted as earrings, necklaces or rings is a plus for the business and needs to be exploit at its maximum. Despite the fact that the pair was advised by the financial counselor that they will be working in an â€Å"anemic lending environment, they sell the bankers only the concept of the buttons business, ignoring the more profitable concept of selling them as jewelry. As a result their offer was rejected by about 10 financial institutions. Finally, Stadium Bank would lend the money but only if guarantee by the Small Business Administration (SBA). By having the SBA guaranteeing their debt Martha and Gail may be removing the bank’s incentive to work directly with them. If they encounter a financial problem they may be ignored by the bank instead of getting assistance as borrowers since SBA is guaranteeing the loan by 90%. The fact that the company’s loan has to be personally assured by their owners may be a downside for the negotiation. Gail and Martha’s personal assets may be affected if this venture goes wrong. We hardly recommend Eastwind Trading Company to analyze extremely careful the terms of their loan, see if the loan is right for them and confirm that what the bank is offering is what their business really needs to flourished and succeed before they sign any agreement with the lender. As for right now we will turndown Eastwind’s project. The venture has no strategy in place to explain how the company plans to diversify itself through the use of new products or new services related to the existing product except for the vague ideas associated with the jewelry’s’ creation which is in fact the most profitable option. When a business is such an unconventional deal as the sale of buttons is, it may result unattractive. The key to success will be then to create a really strong business plan, marketing strategy, a good team of sales rep, well-organized channels distribution and an aggressive advertizing campain in order to sale your ideas and pursue your business aspirations.
